Race Literacy Summer Challenge Toolkit

This toolkit is a list of ideas to start you along the Race Literacy Summer Challenge journey. However, the idea is for you to do your own research, and come up with ideas of your own. The Race Literacy Challenge is meant to be a collective learning experience.

Please share your findings on social media. This way we will all learn together. Your town will have monuments and sights that are different. Learn and share your local history.

Reduce Stress

Traumatic and painful experiences often take our breath away, and not in a good way. Here are some breathing techniques I taught my sound therapy students in the 1990s. They are timeless and still produce the same results: a sense of peace and often a blissful state. One of the quickest ways to reduce racial stress is to take long slow deep breaths into the belly.

Try this:

Breathe deep into the diaphragm. Imagine you are filling up a bottle. You fill from the bottom up. Place your hands on your lower belly to feel the breath as it fills your body. Imagine the air as weighty and allow gravity to pull the breath down deep into the bottom of your diaphragm. Keep filling until your chest gets full. Hold for three seconds, longer if you can, and exhale slowly. Repeat five to ten times.     Excerpt from Cracking the Healer’s Code
